We learnt what we need to act against discrimination: knowledge, skills, reflection -> motivation to act. These reminds me of the concept of Swiss Johann Pestalozzi „head, heart and hand” [głowa, serce, ręka]. It means that our mind, feelings and actions should „act” together.

Mechanism of discrimination in short looks like this. / Mechanizm dyskryminacji w skrócie wygląda tak:

We shared some links related to discrimination and education:
1. History and human rights. Textbook – with workshoops about „state and individuum”, „minority-majority”, freedom of speech, rights of imprisoned people, social rights: in English, in Polish.
2. Antidiscrimination – educational materials in Polish: materials nr 1 or materials nr 2.
3. Textbook about hate speech „Bookmarks” – in English, in Polish.
4. School without discrimination – worksheets for teachers (in Polish): materials nr 1,
materials nr 2.
5. http://rownosc.info (in Polish) and http://rownosc.info/english/ (in English)
6. List of NGOs who deal with discrimination, migration, cultures etc: http://www.bezuprzedzen.org/linki/.
7. A method: „Parts of my identity” („Fragmenty mojej tożsamości”), worksheet.

His life was an inspiration for the conference „Jan Karski. Human beings and H/history. Aims of education for antidiscrimination”.

It took place in Polish parlament in November’14, 28-29. 120 teachers and pupils took part on it. You also can do following things:

1. conduct a workshop about Karski,

2. organise a panel discussion about connecting historical and human rights education with representatives of ngo’s, administration and scientists,

3. organise an Open Space discussion related to the meaning of historical experiences in work against discrimination. You can discuss the interdisciplinary approach of connecting different fields.

Teaching human rights and history https://agnieszkakudelka.pl/2014/03/teaching-human-rights-and-history.html https://agnieszkakudelka.pl/2014/03/teaching-human-rights-and-history.html#respond Tue, 25 Mar 2014 13:37:00 +0000 Combining human rights and history education can be very useful. One of the common values for both fields is the change. If you analyse history you look mostly for the change and dealing with human rights aimes mostly at bringing change into life.

Change is also a title of a book wich is being prepared by an international team of scientists in collaboration with practitioners of history education and human rights education. I will upload it here, when it will be finished in 2016.

Combing thes two fields was also the aim of the project „Education for human rights in the places of remembrance in the context of European crimes’ experiences”

It was a German-Russian-Polish project about teaching human rights and history at memorial sites. It take place from April till December 2014 in Perm (Russia), Bergen-Belsen (Germany) and Oświęcim (Poland).

The results of the project can be viewed and downloaded here.

Within the project I worked on learning modules related to the experience of crimes of Nazis and Soviet Union. My learning modul is dedicated co-workers of prisons.

I wrote an article about the meaning of the year 1914 for L’viv and Galicia. I also wrote about the meaning of Galicia for the states Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and Russian Imperium at that time. I’ve analysed the press and the memoires.

The title of my article in German: DAS GALIZISCHE „PULVERFASS“ UND DER BEGINN DES ERSTEN WELTKRIEGS. Eine Krisenregion zwischen Österreich-Ungarn und Russland.

The title of my article in English: THE GALICIA’S „POWDER KEG“ AND THE START OF WORLD WAR I. War zone between Austria-Hungary and Russia.

It appeared in the anthology of Jürgen Angelow and Johannes Großmann „Wandel, Umbruch, Absturz.

Since 2010 I’m attempting to do it on a theoretical and practical way. I worked out a theory and methodology on it, which could be useful also for you. You can download it here. You can also download workshop scenarios for work with adults and pupils here.

In December 2012 and Januar 2013 I presented the materials to the librarians who could implement them later on in their societies. I have now a lot of practical experience and many conclusions which I applied for the textbook which we (team within the KARTA Center) prepared.
