Holland), napisano tomy wspomnień i publikacji. Wielu starszych Polaków wspomina to miasto z czułością i wielu nie chce mierzyć się z jego teraźniejszością. Nic dziwnego, bo po co niszczyć cudowny obraz żyjący we wspomnieniach. A Lwów się zmienia.”

Teaching human rights and history

Combining human rights and history education can be very useful. One of the common values for both fields is the change. If you analyse history you look mostly for the change and dealing with human rights aimes mostly at bringing change into life.

Change is also a title of a book wich is being prepared by an international team of scientists in collaboration with practitioners of history education and human rights education. I will upload it here, when it will be finished in 2016.

Combing thes two fields was also the aim of the project „Education for human rights in the places of remembrance in the context of European crimes’ experiences”

It was a German-Russian-Polish project about teaching human rights and history at memorial sites. It take place from April till December 2014 in Perm (Russia), Bergen-Belsen (Germany) and Oświęcim (Poland).

Within the project I worked on learning modules related to the experience of crimes of Nazis and Soviet Union. My learning modul is dedicated co-workers of prisons.

Urban Spaces of L’viv

There was a number of number of international conferences dedicated to the link of topics „Lviv: City – Society – Culture”. On May 29-31, 2014 the 12th conference took place at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and the Center for Urban History. This conference, dedicated to Lviv’s urban space in both its physical and symbolic dimensions, was precisely called „Urban Spaces of Lviv/Lwów/Lemberg: Imagination, Experiences, Practices.”More informations.

Memory places of Kraków

I helped to conduct the seminar about history of and memory places in Kraków (13-19 May 2013) of Prof. Jürgen Angelow and (this time) Prof. Zdzisław Noga. The participants were students of the Freie Universität Berlin und Pedagogical University in Krakow. The topics of speeches were related as always to historical places (monuments, public places, churches etc.).

The development of the seminar’s concept and the seminar organistation were very important to me since my Ph.D is dedicated L’viv’s remembrance from 1867 till 1939.

Beside that I gave a speech on the every day life in Nowa Huta, relations between inhabitants of Nowa Huta and Kraków and the museum concept of Nowa Huta (ecomuseum), which was also an interesting experience.

Polish Eastern Borderland in Węgliniec

Commemoration of an expulsion can help to overcome the trauma of expelled. This is the case with the Museum of the Polish Eastern Borderland in Węgliniec, which I visited. The history of the Museum you can read and see here. It’s of course a very emotional and not professional museum, but it’s interesting to see and to listen what the whole equipment, documents and photos mean for the museum’s founder Alfred Janicki.

Janicki deals with emotions of the visitors very instrumentally. He even makes them want to cry. Unfortunatelly he also seems to own the the whole equipment, documents and photos. He works now for the city library, so hopefully the things will be later taken over by the library.

Monuments as a medium of remembrance

European Network Remembrance and Solidarity established in Warsaw supports since 2011 researches on genealogies of memory in Central and Eastern Europe. It’s first conference was dedicated to theories and methods. I gave there a paper on „Monuments and memory constructs in L’viv between 1867 and 1939”. The programme of the conference you can download here.The panelists analysed also public space of Kaliningrad and walking memory of Sevastopol. Memory places of the regions

Comparisions of regionals researches and finding a broader geographical context can be also very inspiring. So the conference „Regional memory places: Western Bohemia and Middle Germany – a comparision” (Regionale Erinnerungsorte: Westböhmen und Mitteldeutschland im europäischen Kontext) in November 2011 was for me a great possibility to see the bigger picture.

It was organised in Greiz by the Technische Universität Chemnitz, Professor of the European Regional History in cooperation with the Dialog mit Böhmen e.V. / Antikomplex e.V. / SOA Cheb, Greiz (Thüringen).

It was important for me to analyse the regional connotations of the monuments.

Fluctuating memory

Collective, individual, cultural or communicative memory are very well known in the science. But what is fluctuating or ambiguous memory? I came to this conclusion in regard to my analyse of monuments in L’viv between 1867 and 1939. „Ambiguous memory” means that the memory on one person or event is differential for different society groups and even individuals.

The monuments could be symbols of the city, region, nation and state, also of course of an political, cultural, religious idea at once. This results from the booming landscape of monuments in L’viv.

I presented my these for the participants of the Kolloquium about current researches in the history of the Institut für Europäische Geschichte (Professur für Europäische Regionalgeschichte, Technische Universität Chemnitz) in Chemnitz in November 2011.
